How EB-5 Green Cards Gave My Family Stability and New Opportunities—Felix from India (Part 2)

When my family and I first came to the United States, we did not necessarily expect to stay permanently. I moved from Canada to the United States in 2017, and my family joined me in 2019. But as my children settled into school and my wife and I established ourselves professionally, our plans began to change.

We wanted a long-term future in the United States—and, as an Indian-born professional, I knew that relying on an employer-sponsored immigration path could involve significant uncertainty. That ultimately led me to EB-5 and to an investment in EB5AN’s Snake River Sporting Club rural EB-5 project (now closed for investment).

Today, my family and I have received our physical U.S. Green Cards.

Looking back, the single word that best describes what EB-5 has given us is certainty. I now have significantly greater freedom in my career, my children have more options for their futures, and our family no longer has to organize major life decisions around the limitations of a temporary immigration status. These are some of the most important benefits of an EB-5 Green Card.

In this second part of my EB-5 story, I explain what it was like receiving our Green Cards, why I selected a rural EB-5 project, how I worked with EB5AN and my immigration attorney, how the Snake River project has progressed since my investment, and what I would recommend to other prospective EB-5 investors. My first EB-5 interview focused on the earlier stages of that journey.

Why My Family Needed a Long-Term Immigration Solution

I originally moved to the United States from Canada in 2017 for work. My family followed in 2019. Initially, our plans were temporary. We did not arrive intending to remain in the United States indefinitely. But that changed over time as my children became established in school, my wife and I became established in our careers, and we began considering what it would take to build a longer-term future here.

My employer was willing to sponsor me, and we considered other immigration options. But because I was born in India, I was concerned about the uncertainty and potential waiting periods associated with an employer-sponsored path. EB-5 increasingly looked like the safer option for what my family was trying to accomplish, particularly compared with the limitations that Indian professionals can face when relying on employer-sponsored visas.

I began seriously researching the program, although I did not make my decision immediately. At the time, there was also uncertainty surrounding the future of the EB-5 program, so I continued watching developments before committing.

Learning About EB-5 Before Making My Investment

I first connected with EB5AN several years before I ultimately invested. Even when I was not yet ready to proceed, I continued following EB5AN’s videos, articles, and other educational materials. That helped me gradually understand how the EB-5 process worked, the likely timeline, the types of investments available, and some of the differences between rural and urban EB-5 projects.

The educational content was particularly useful because EB-5 was not something I wanted to rush into. This is a major immigration and financial decision, and I wanted enough information to understand what I was doing and why. By the time I was ready to move forward, I had already spent considerable time learning about the program and evaluating my EB-5 options.

Selecting My EB-5 Immigration Attorney

One of the first major decisions was choosing an immigration attorney. Sam Silverman gave me several attorney referrals, and I spoke with approximately four or five of them. I used those conversations to understand their approach, what would be required from me, and their respective fee structures before selecting my EB-5 immigration attorney.

I ultimately selected Fred Voigtmann in California. Once I had made my decision, the process became much more concrete. Fred provided a clear game plan, while the EB5AN team helped me move forward with the investment side of the process. An experienced attorney plays an important role throughout the step-by-step EB-5 process.

For the source-of-funds work, I received a checklist explaining the documentation I would need. That included records connected with my employment and income, education, properties, and shares that I planned to sell. Having a defined list of requirements allowed me to begin gathering everything systematically instead of trying to figure out the EB-5 source-of-funds documentation on my own.

My own funds were being raised within North America, which made the trail relatively straightforward, but we still needed to collect the appropriate bank records and supporting documents and connect everything properly. That experience reinforced something I would tell any prospective EB-5 investor today: your source-of-funds documentation needs to be extremely clean. This is one of the most important parts of preparing a strong EB-5 source-of-funds package.

Why I Wanted a Rural EB-5 Project

Once I began evaluating EB-5 investments, I had already decided that I strongly preferred a rural project. There were urban projects that may have offered attractive financial returns, but immigration speed was more important to me. I understood that rural EB-5 projects offer priority processing, and that benefit matched what I was trying to accomplish for my family.

My children were born in Canada, and I wanted them to receive the benefits of permanent U.S. residence as quickly as possible. That was especially important for my oldest daughter as she moved through college and prepared eventually to enter the workforce. Having U.S. permanent residence, together with her Canadian status, would give her much greater flexibility when deciding where she wanted to build her career.

For me, that immigration objective outweighed simply looking for the investment with the highest potential return. Once I had narrowed my search to rural projects, I could concentrate on the other factors that mattered most to me.

Why I Chose Snake River Sporting Club

Several considerations ultimately led me to Snake River Sporting Club. I wanted my investment capital to be put to work as quickly as possible. Job creation was important. I wanted a reputable developer behind the project. And I wanted to understand the documentation and the overall structure before committing. These were all part of the kind of due diligence investors should perform on a rural EB-5 project.

When I invested, Snake River had not yet received Form I-956F approval. Normally, that could have been an important consideration for me. But I had spent enough time following EB5AN and reviewing its projects to feel comfortable with the team’s due-diligence process. The EB5AN projects I was familiar with had received their project approvals, which gave me confidence in the work being done before projects were offered to investors. I therefore felt comfortable investing before Snake River received its own approval; the project subsequently received Form I-956F approval from USCIS.

Another major factor was the deployment of my capital. I did not want my investment simply sitting for an extended period before being put to work. With Snake River, I understood that the money would be deployed promptly. That combination—the rural designation, my confidence in the due diligence, the developer and job-creation considerations, and the ability to put my capital to work quickly—made Snake River the right fit for my goals.

My Experience Working With EB5AN

My decision to invest with EB5AN did not come from one meeting or one sales conversation. It developed over time. I had been following the company’s videos, articles, information booklets, and other materials well before I committed. Those resources allowed me to educate myself first, and learning about EB5AN’s approach and regional center track record helped me evaluate the company before making a decision.

Then, when I began interacting directly with the team, the process reinforced that confidence. The investment documentation was prepared smoothly, and the combination of EB5AN handling the investment side and Fred handling the immigration side reduced the amount of work I personally needed to manage.

That was important to me because I had a full-time job and traveled frequently for work. I did not have unlimited time to spend managing every administrative detail of an EB-5 filing. Having the two sides of the process clearly organized made the overall experience much easier.

Receiving Our Physical Green Cards

After going through the investment and immigration process, receiving our physical Green Cards was a tremendous relief. They actually arrived at my attorney’s office while my family and I were on vacation in India. Knowing that we would return to the United States as lawful permanent residents was an extremely happy moment.

There had been continued discussion about possible changes to U.S. immigration policy, and like many investors who had already gone through the process, I naturally wondered whether future changes could affect us. Receiving the approval and then the physical cards felt like a major weight had been lifted. We had finally reached the outcome we had been working toward: U.S. permanent residence through EB-5.

An Immediate Benefit for My Daughter

One of the first people I thought about after receiving the Green Cards was my daughter. She is a student at Purdue University, and the change in her immigration status had an immediate practical effect for our family. According to the university classification we were dealing with, her status changed from international to domestic, and we were able to save close to $3,000 in tuition. Domestic student status and potential tuition advantages are among the educational benefits of an EB-5 Green Card.

But the longer-term benefit is even more important to me. My children were born in Canada. With their U.S. permanent residence, they now have greater flexibility to decide where they want to study, work, and build their futures. For my oldest daughter in particular, that means eventually being able to consider opportunities in both the U.S. and Canadian job markets. That flexibility was one of the reasons I wanted the fastest realistic permanent-residence path I could find.

How My Green Card Has Changed My Career

For me personally, the biggest benefit is certainty. My Green Card expands my professional choices in a very practical way. I have already moved into consulting and am expanding my career without being restricted to a single employer or immigration sponsor. The ability to work without an employer-sponsorship requirement is one of the major career advantages of an EB-5 Green Card.

That kind of freedom is difficult to quantify until you have experienced the alternative. When your immigration status is connected to an employer, career decisions are not always simply career decisions. Changing jobs, pursuing a different type of work, or changing professional direction can involve immigration consequences as well. Permanent residence changes that equation.

I can now think about where I want my career to go without the same visa limitations. My wife benefits from greater professional flexibility as well, and our children will have their own choices when they enter the workforce. That is why, looking back, “certainty” is the word I keep returning to.

How Snake River Has Progressed Since My Investment

My relationship with EB5AN did not stop after I made the investment and filed my immigration application. I continue to receive quarterly information covering important Snake River milestones and investment updates.

From the information I have received, the project has been progressing as I expected. It has remained on schedule, it has met its milestones, more jobs have been created than originally indicated, and units have been selling. As an investor, those are the kinds of developments I want to see, particularly because Snake River has generated significant EB-5 job creation.

The continuing updates are also important. Once you invest in an EB-5 project, you naturally want to know what is happening with your capital and whether the project is moving forward according to plan. I appreciate continuing to receive that information instead of having communication end once my investment was completed.

My Three Priorities for New EB-5 Investors

Over the course of my own EB-5 journey, I have spoken with many people who were considering the program themselves. Every investor’s circumstances are different. Career situation, finances, family needs, country of birth, and long-term immigration objectives can all affect whether EB-5 makes sense and what kind of strategy is appropriate.

But for someone whose primary objective is eliminating immigration uncertainty and creating continuity in professional and family life, I believe EB-5 can be a very compelling option. That can be especially important when a person’s existing visa limits career choices or ties that person closely to a particular employer.

For investors who decide to proceed, I would focus on three areas. First, choose the right project. Second, understand the immigration structure and how the EB-5 process applies to your own circumstances. Third, take the source-of-funds process extremely seriously. The documentation needs to be clean, and this is one of the areas where an experienced immigration attorney becomes particularly important. A thorough EB-5 project due-diligence checklist can help investors evaluate these considerations before committing their funds.

Looking Back on My EB-5 Experience

I would recommend both Fred Voigtmann and EB5AN based on my experience working with them. Fred handled the immigration process and successfully submitted our case, while EB5AN helped us throughout the investment process and continues to provide information about Snake River.

Now, with our physical Green Cards in hand, my family has something that was difficult to achieve through our previous immigration options: long-term certainty in the United States. My wife and I have greater professional freedom, my children have more choices for their education and future careers, and I am no longer restricted professionally to one employer or sponsor.

When we moved to the United States, we did not know whether it would become our permanent home. Over time, as our careers and our children’s lives became rooted here, that uncertainty became increasingly difficult. EB-5 gave us a way to resolve it.

For me, that is ultimately the most important result of the entire process.
