This status is valid for 10 years and can be renewed continuously. After five years, permanent residents who meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/forms\/explore-my-options\/become-a-us-citizen-through-naturalization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the necessary requirements<\/a> can <a href=\"https:\/\/eb5visainvestments.com\/2022\/07\/08\/how-to-obtain-us-citizenship-by-investment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obtain U.S. citizenship<\/a>. Citizenship grants access to a U.S. passport \u2014 one of the strongest in the world \u2014 and federal benefits such as Financial Aid. Citizens can vote in federal elections, run for elected office, and apply for jobs in the U.S. government. Citizens are free from dealing with immigration paperwork; they do not have to renew their Green Card or pay immigration filing fees. Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/eb5visainvestments.com\/2022\/09\/02\/the-benefits-of-the-eb-5-visa-program-for-investors-with-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">children of permanent residents<\/a> will automatically become citizens when a parent completes the naturalization process. Although there are many benefits to gaining citizenship, doing so is entirely optional. There are several reasons why some permanent residents do not apply for U.S. citizenship, such as problems relating to dual citizenship. Dual citizenship means being a citizen of two countries simultaneously. While the United States allows dual citizenship, certain countries \u2014 such as India and China \u2014 do not. As such, permanent residents may have to relinquish citizenship in their country of origin before they can acquire U.S. citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Although U.S. citizenship will protect an individual from deportation based on criminal charges, this is not the case for permanent residents. As part of the naturalization process, an applicant\u2019s criminal history will be heavily scrutinized, and <a href=\"http:\/\/uscode.house.gov\/view.xhtml?req=granuleid%3AUSC-prelim-title8-section1227&amp;num=0&amp;edition=prelim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certain crimes are grounds for removal<\/a>.
